Best restaurants in the World
The highly anticipated list of The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024, sponsored by S.Pellegrino & Acqua Panna, was revealed on Wednesday 5 June in a glitzy and glamorous live awards ceremony held at Wynn Las Vegas. The event brought together the best chefs, restaurateurs and hospitality industry icons on the planet.
The 22nd edition of the annual ranking features restaurants from 26 territories, five continents and eight exciting new and re-entries
The awards – considered the Oscars of global fine dining – were handed out at a ceremony with Barcelona’s Disfrutar walking away with the top prize. Ranked number two last year, it’s owned and run by chefs Oriol Castro, Eduard Xatruch and Mateu Casanas
Coming in at fifth was Lima’s Maido, one of three restaurants from the city to make the list, giving the Peruvian capital’s reputation as South America’s premier dining destination yet another boost.
Maido reaches the Top 5
Peruvian restaurants shone in ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024’, with Maido as the best ranked in world gastronomy. Mitsuharu Tsumura’s establishment, known as ‘Micha’, not only consolidated its position as the best in South America, but also surpassed its previous position in the ranking, moving up to 5th place. Mitsuharu Tsumura also received the ‘Estrella Damm’ award, a prestigious recognition of his outstanding career as an international chef.
Maido, the renowned restaurant of Mitsuharu Tsumura, known as “Micha”, not only ranked as the best in South America but also climbed to 5th place globally. This achievement not only cements Maido as a leader in haute cuisine but also highlights the evolution and impact of Peruvian gastronomy on the international scene
Japan meets Peru: Micha’s ancestors landed in Peru from Japan in 1889 and the chef was born in Lima. He then completed a culinary arts program in the US and made the trip to Osaka to specialize in Japanese cuisine. In 2009, he opened Maido in Lima, where he combines Japanese techniques and Peruvian ingredients into Nikkei cuisine. Some 15 years later, the menu may have diversified, but the philosophy remains the same: serving the best local ingredients changing every season.
The Maido experience: The tasting menu features more than 10 courses and may include delicacies like The Triple, a combination of avocado, eggs, tomato and chashu (braised pork belly); caracoles al sillao (soy sauce), sea snails, with yellow chilli foam and Nikkei sauce; squid ramen with Amazonian chorizo, duck dumpling, nigiri and more. An à la carte menu is also available, filled with seasonal products and a catch of the day.
Other Peruvian Restaurants in the list
Other Peruvian restaurants that stood out among the best in the world include Mayta and Kjolle. Mayta ranked 41st, while Kjolle managed to climb to 16th place. It is important to remember that Central, the first-place restaurant in 2023, did not participate in this edition of ‘The World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2024’ due to its victory in the previous edition.
Kjolle – Rank 16
With Kjolle, Pia Leon and her team articulate knowledge, arts and cultures to offer a unique way of approaching the megadiversity of their region.
The Pacific Ocean and two opposing currents, the coast, deserts, tropical forests, mountain Amazonia, high plateau, high altitude lagoons and jungle rivers are represented in the inputs that inhabit them, which meet with other elements of their own nature as well as with techniques and processes, as if they were fibers that intertwine in a harmonious fabric, with a continuous capacity to evolve and rethink their configuration.
Mayta – Rank 41
Mayta, which means “Noble Land” in Aymara, was born to give an ode to our land
It is Pesaque’s flagship restaurant and is a personal contemporary expression of Peruvian cuisine based on flavors and preparations of memory and history brought to actuality
In 2019, Mayta entered the list of Latin America’s 50 Best Restaurants; in 2020 the restaurant won the Highest Climber Award, while in 2022 it entered the list of The World’s 50 Best and was also awarded as the best restaurant in the latest edition of The World Culinary Awards
“It is important to mention that restaurants can only win the top prize once, after which they’re entered into a separate “Best of the Best” program.
Members of that elite group include Geranium and Noma in Copenhagen, as well as New York’s Eleven Madison Park, The Fat Duck near London, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Italy, and Mirazur in Menton, France. Last year’s winner, Central of Lima, Peru, now joins them on that list”
